The UK Soul Chart Album

The compilation album of the year has arrived!
THE UK SOUL CHART ALBUM  has been compiled by DSG's Gary Van den Bussche, the CD has some of the finest Soul tracks of the year from The UK Soul Chart all on one CD. The tracks on the CD have all been re-mastered for your listening pleasure. 19 Modern Soul gems including unreleased tracks and mixes, the CD will only have one limited edition pressing!

For some time now I have had the idea of compiling a UK Soul Chart CD, in the same way, that we would have once collected the Motown Chartbusters or Top of the Pops (non-original artists) albums back in the day (now I'm showing my age). So I approached Carl Barrington Webster who had also had the same idea but had put it on the backburner as he was busy.
In the UK, unlike many other countries, we have a UK soul scene and call it ‘Soul’, Americans now refer to it as R&B but they include rap etc into the genre. We are still very proud of our soul scene and respect the artists (old and new) who continue to record soul music. Many a soul legend has passed, including most recently our ‘Queen of Soul’ Aretha Franklin, so it's our duty to keep soul music alive!  The artists now recording Soul music have to live from touring and selling merchandise as due to streaming their revenue from music sales has vanished. It would be so great if respected organisations like The Grammy's and such like would bring back a Soul category to their awards so the artists of today could gain the RESPECT they have soulfully earnt, how otherwise are we going to move Soul Music forward without new artists?

Sir Wick - I Love You (Included on The UK Soul Chart CD)

K Avett - The Matter (Included on the UK Soul Chart CD)

Show Tyme -Come On Home To Me - (Included On The UK Soul Chart CD)

In this world, like it is now we might have never have had such icons as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye,.Michael Jackson, George Benson, Earth Wind & Fire, Otis Redding, Motown Records if they never received mainstream airplay or acknowledgment of their work. I feel today there are many talented Soul singers that we need to expose to a much bigger world than just our little marketplace that many don't even know exists and by such ignore. It's up to us to spread the word Soul Music is very much alive and with help, it can be reborn.

Every week Carl and his Starpoint Radio team compile the official 'The UK Soul Chart' of which many of the featured artists on this CD have appeared. The chart airs UK Time Sunday 4-6 pm & repeated on Monday evening between 5-7 pm (UK Time).

The artwork for the CD has been designed by Roger Williams

The Radio DJ's have said...

John Leech (BBC) Indie soul is sounding good and every track on UK Soul Chart is a winner. A sumptuous collection of new, unreleased and rarities. A must album
Paul Miller (BBC) This Is A Great Compilation will receive lots of love from me.
Gary Spence(Solar Radio) Album Of The Week - What a fantastic tracklisting one of those albums
you can leave on and just let play!
Bigger (Mi-Soul, Blues & Soul) There have been some great Compilations & this has to be one of the best, In all honesty, I don't think I Skipped a track! Especially Love Miracle Thomas, Ryle, Regina Troupe, Ronnie Wright, Darien Dean & That Ed The Red must be his best ever.
JOEY COYNE (Starpoint Radio)
Wow, This must rate as one of the finest complications of the last few years.
In the words of Errol brown......Everyone's A WINNER!!!
With many thanks for your support.

Aretha Franklin Queen Of Soul Forever

Aretha Franklin The Queen Of Soul paved the way like no other female vocalist of our time.
When I was around 8 years old my late father used to have late parties in the house and all I could hear from my bedroom as a child was the 'Lady Soul' album on repeat from 'Chain Of Fools', 'Money Won't Change', 'People Get Ready', Issac Hayes 'Shaft' & Curtis Mayfield 'Curtis album. Even in my sleep, Aretha was touching my Soul not just a great singer, but a great pianist also.

I collected every album she ever recorded from the unsuccessful Columbia recording period right through to Atlantic recordings and then Artista records, That was nine or so Columbia releases that were released from 1961- 1967. The Atlantic Records hit period started in 1967 with her 'I Never Loved A Man' (The Way I Loved You) album the first of 20 album releases including one of the most succesful Gospel album of all time the Double Vinyl released 'Amazing Grace 'set. Her Atlantic Recordings hit factor slowed down in 1977-1979 with her very underrated Curtis Mayfield set 'Almighty Fire', Lamont Dozier produced 'Sweet Passion', & Van McCoy's mostly produced 'La Diva' album.

In 1980 she signed with Arista Records with Clive Davis in the A&R hot seat Aretha was back with her debut Arista set 'Aretha' which included her version of 'What A Fool Believes', Arif Mardin produced her next set in 1981 the 'Love All The Hurt Away' in which it's title track was a duet with George Benson. Luther Vandross was called in for the next two sets 'Jump To It' & 'Get It Right', Narada Michael Walden for the 'Who Zooming Who' album that included the #1 R&B /#3 National Billboard chart hit 'Freeway Of Love'. 'A Rose is Still a Rose' was her thirty-seventh studio album it resulted in the singer's most critically acclaimed and best-selling album of the 1990s, the single featured Lauryn Hill, the album stands as one of Aretha's most successful sets. Clive Davis once again took control of Aretha Franklin last studio album 'Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics' which was a tribute of ten covers of songs made famous by female recording artists, which once again took the Queen to the top 3 of the  USA R&B chart with her covers of songs made famous by Gladys Knight, Etta James, Gloria Gaynor, Barbra Streisand, Chaka Khan, Alicia Keys & Adele.

Soul music is back in the national charts after the death of the Queen, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson (To Be Loved) arguably started the sound in 1957 with 'You Send Me' & tagged The Man That Invented Soul, but my research also gives Jackie Wilson credit and for inspiring The Motown Sound with Berry Gordy.
Soul Music deserves its own category back!  like it used to have, as R&B (Rhythm & Bass) includes Hip Hop and Rap which now heads the way in America, Soul Music is looked as an older person's thing, but there has never been so much great new Soul Music around. If you tune into Starpoint Radio you will discover the best of this, it's an online & DAB radio station that offers the best in today's Soul music with classics mixed in, other stations include Solar Radio in which you can listen via Sky TV also. It's time to tune into SOUL MUSIC once again and let the music touch you with great recent albums by Cornell Carter, Rai, Tyra Lavone, Al Lindsey, Show Tyme, Ty Causey, Chris Jasper etc. As we get older the melodies of today, with the most sound like they haven't got any, and in fact machine-driven, with the odd exception of artists like Bruno Mars, Alicia Keys, Beyonce (at times), Pharrell Williams ‎among others.

We have lost many of the greats and it's now time to support the new& older independent artists that are still creating fantastic Soul music for our listening pleasure in which many of you don't know exist.
Aretha Franklin The Queen Of Soul saves our Soul and puts Soul music back in the national charts, what a shame she had to pass for this to happen.
RIP Aretha, we will love you forever and you'll always be in our soul!

Thanks for reading

Starpoint Radio was first founded over twenty years ago in 1985 as an alternative music station for London and the Home Counties.
Originally broadcasting once a week on Sundays, demand quickly prompted the addition of an entire weekend broadcast and Starpoint Radio soon earned the reputation of being a quality radio station with presenters whose musical knowledge and presentation skills were second to none!
Starpoint Radio, therefore, became known as THE REAL ALTERNATIVE. Over the next three years Starpoint Radio attempted to broadcast seven days a week, but as an unlicensed station, this proved difficult within the rules and regulations of the DTI. In December 1988 it was decided to pursue alternative avenues of broadcasting and Starpoint's final show as an unlicensed station was from infamous Crazy Larry's on the Kings Road in Chelsea.starpoint_radio_good_old_days
In June 1991, Starpoint Radio applied for and received one of the first restricted broadcast licenses for a period of twenty-one days and the first show came from the unlikely venue of Windsor Safari Park, covering Windsor, Slough, Maidenhead, and most of Surrey and South London! The following three weeks were a rip-roaring success with the station being able to adhere to its long-held principles of quality music and quality presenters without bowing to the pressures of commercialism. The success of the Windsor broadcasts led to Starpoint Radio being approached by Alex Lowes of the Southport Weekenders to broadcast from the legendary event.
This resulted in Starpoint's management joining forces with another former unlicensed London radio station and the two merged into a satellite-based radio station. With Starpoint's connections, this radio station became the official broadcaster for the Southport weekenders until the BBC's 1- Xtra took over in - now here's a problem, the old mind's gone blank. Does anybody out there remember when 1 Xtra took over? Perhaps you could let us know so we can put this archive right.
In February 2005, management decided to part ways and Starpoint Radio was reborn.starpoint_radio_antenna_1985
As "The Real Alternative" Starpoint Radio is now 'the' station for quality music and quality presenting! Now broadcasting on DAB and 24 hours on the internet, Starpoint Radio continues to grow each month proving that it is possible to run a quality soul based music station.

Starpoint radio is the home to The Official UK Soul Chart which updates with a live broadcast on Sunday afternoon from 4-6pm (UK Time) and repeated Monday's from 5-7pm. The UK Soul chart is the most accurate survey with its chart being compiled from DJ's returns of plays and sales of the week. Disco Soul Gold CD

The  Disco Soul Gold CD #1 UK Soul charts album that features stunning new tracks from the DSG stable.

The album has taken over three in years in production, along the way the label has achieved over 10 UK Soul #1 tracks and the same amount of top 3 UK Soul hits.

Many describe DSG as a 20th century Motown or Phillidaelphia international with a modern retro sound, but with a respectful edge to today's music.

The album features 16 Nigel Lowis remastered, remixed or newly recorded tracks by the likes of Dina Carroll (her first recording in over 20 years), Mather & Kingdon (remixed from the duo's #1 album Life's So Sweet),  Chubby Tavares from supergroup Tavares, Terry Ronald, Ola Onabule who is still touring the world since the release of Soul Town, Chairmen Of The Board ft Ken Knox, Freda Payne (of Band Of Gold fame) in a duet with Clif Payne which is produced by Preston Glass (Aretha Franklin, George Benson, Whitney Houston) plus Marc Staggers who many compare to the late Luther Vandross.

Simon Cowell thought labels, artists were not recording music like this any longer, think he might be pleasantly surprised!

Disco Soul All dayer Folkestone

After a year of planning the big Disco Soul, all dayer is almost upon us on Saturday 14th October at
The Grand Burstin Hotel, Marine Parade, The Harbour, Folkstone, Kent, CT20 1TX.

The show starts at midday until midnight with DJ's Nick Doodney (Soul
train Sounds), Markus Yearly & Sue Hill (Teddington Disco Soul), (Disco) Gary Van den Bussche (Disco Soul Gold, DSG), Fitzroy (Soul Survivors Magazine), Guy Unger (Stomp Radio), Gary Spence (Solar Radio) who has been voted a national treasure by his listeners, Nigel Lowis (Dig Productions, Songwriter, producer, remixer) Nigel is all set to make his all dayer debut on the Folkstone stage with a set of tunes that is impossible to hear anywhere else! Nigel has been rehearsing for the past three months in creating a set of tunes that you will know, but with live parts added as if he was producing a remix, but he will sho nuff be in the mix!

You will also get to hear exclusive DSG tracks from the forthcoming CD album that will not be available until the CD is released in November. The label started 5 years after discovering the then unknown SouLutions, a demo version of Listen had been sitting in a drawer for over seven years, when Linda Lucas (Louise SouLutions Mum) sent it to DSG head of Music Gary Van den Bussche, who after a break from the music industry decided to make that the first release on his new record label DSG! The song reached #1 on the Soul charts with a Drizabone remix Gary arranged and they have gone on to not only have other number ones but have established themselves as the UK's #1 modern Soul band. Louise's voice is not too be missed live,  SouLutions were recently invited to support Melba Moore (This Is It, Love's Comin At Ya) at her recent sold out Jazz Cafe concert in London.

Peter Symphorien The Soul Man had been singing in his local area for years, Beverly Creswell sent DSG's Gary Van den Bussche a clip of Peter singing The Love I Lost at a pub gig on an exclusive video, Gary tracked him down, introduced Peter to Nigel Lowis for production on a Soul City People release that would feature Peter on lead, we both agreed Peter could easily be a modern day Eddie Levert (O'Jays) or indeed Teddy Pendergrass, the most amazing thing, around six weeks later Nigel Lowis listen to the clip not once but like me three times, I thought you already heard it before Peter started recording? Nigel said no, I could not find it, so I took your word for it!

12 hours of the music with DJ's, SouLutions, Peter Symphorien all this for only £10 when you use the DSG £5 discount code at the checkout click here

Maurro is Too Hot To Handle!

Mike Maurro passion for producing the best remixes come from his heart for the love of music. A couple of years ago Mike charted in the national chart with his peak Hour remix box set CD set that was released on Harmless Records.

Since then Mike has been releasing limited edition 12 inch records that not only sell out on release but then become collectable.

UK Supergroup Heatwave are the latest band to get the Maurro make over Too Hot to Handle indeed I hear you thinking, but also included is The Groove Line, The Disco Classic Boogie Nights and the lush ballad classic  Always And Forever. These 12 inches showcase Maurro's mighty fine work  as he utilises some previously unheard studio ad-libs and instrumentation to fantastic effect, these mighty fine extended vinyl releases are to be released on the 29th September through Juno which I'm sure the demand will be massive.

A mighty fine tribute to the maestro songwriter Rod Temperton who we lost last year, lead vocals by Keith Wilder & the late Johnnie Wilder, Jr, produced by Barry Blue.

Imagination Leee John is number one

Big congratulations to Imagination Feat. Leee John whose new album ‘Retropia’ and the album’s lead single ‘Do It Right Now’ on Cristal Records are currently topping the UK Soul chart.

There is a lot of interest in the album as Leee John has recently just been on TV shows that  include Lorraine, The Wright Show & The BBC One Show.

Billed as the group’s penultimate album, ‘Retropia’ features the unmistakable vocals of Leee John set against Imagination’s equally distinctive combination of retro soul, funk and jazz.

Since first lighting up the charts during the 1980s and selling over 30 million records thanks to an impressive run of hits such as ‘Body Talk’, ‘Just An Illusion’, ‘Flashback’, ‘Music & Lights’ and ‘Changes’, the multi-award-winning British soul group’s lead vocalist/songwriter Leee John has enjoyed throughout the years a prolific career as a solo artist, collaborator, songwriter, producer and, more recently, a filmmaker.

And after such a long wait for ‘Retropia’ Leee says fans can expect one more Imagination album: “I always knew ‘Retropia’ was going to eventually happen one day, I just didn’t realise there would be such a long period of time over the years in between. As soon as we finished recording this album it became obvious to me we have one more to go, so I’m now in the unusual position of knowing this is Imagination’s penultimate album.”
The recording process for ‘Retropia’ would become a vital catharsis for Leee, who was coming to terms with the death of his sister Linda and three close friends in the space of a year. Leee said, “I felt like I was in emotional whirlpool; trying to deal with all these deaths and supporting my family, especially my mother who’d lost a daughter, and my best friend’s daughters who’d now lost both parents.”
Understandably, recording the vocals in such circumstances was emotionally demanding. Leee said, “There are several songs on the album that remind me of my sister, including the song ‘Brighter Day’ which I wrote in Munich on the day she had her accident and subsequently passed away 24 hours later. I couldn't listen to the song - much less sing it - without thinking of her, but I somehow found the inner-strength to realise what I had written was uplifting and had a spiritual sense of dealing with life's trials. It took so much of my strength to perform it.”
Produced in London in LJ Studios with long-time associate producer/engineer Dee Vaz, and mixed by Fran├žois Gaucher at Alhambra Studios in Rochford, France, Leee produced, arranged, wrote and co-wrote all the songs on ‘Retropia’, except for the album’s four covers versions: Eddie Kendrick’s ‘Tell Her Love Has Felt The Need’, Junior Murvin’s ‘Police and Thieves’ (a secret bonus track which was co-produced with Dennis Bovell), a collaboration with the Gibson Brothers and acclaimed British blues guitarist Mark Vandergucht on AC/DC’s ‘Highway To Hell’, and another collaboration on Stevie Wonder’s ‘Visions’ with Level 42’s Mike Lindup, which was recorded for the charity SOS Children, of which Leee has been a Patron for the past 18 years.

With Retropia dedicated to Imagination’s fans around the world, the set also includes songs which Leee has performed on stage live but, surprisingly, has never placed on any album until now. These songs include ‘Utopia’, ‘Make Your Mind Up’ and ‘Fantasia’, which became an underground classic when Leee put it out in the early ‘90s as a white-label obscurity under the name Johnny X.
Looking ahead to the album’s release, Leee said, “The recording of Retropia got me through a very dark time and gave me the strength to keep in our hearts the spirit of those who are no longer with us. Each song creates a tapestry of time, and the music and the melodies will live on long after we are gone.”
Described by the BBC as “classic Imagination…but fresh and very much 2017”, the single ‘Do It Right Now’ has already become  a Solar Radio’s ‘Single Of The Week’ and delighted to announce it's second week at   number# 1 in the UK Soul Charts.

Out Of The Blue Keni Stevens hits Number One

Congratulations to Keni Stevens who is number one in the Soul charts! 30 years after his album 'Blue Moods' hit the spot selling over a million copies worldwide.

Out of the blue marks the long awaited return to the world stage for British soul singer Keni Stevens, who is currently taking bookings for pa's and festivals around the world.

The CD is currently available in record stores in most parts of the world, and it sure does come Out Of The Blue, the first single from the album ONE WAY TICKET TO LOVE  is available as a download from DSG via iTunes.
Keni Stevens turned the Brit soul scene upside down by daring to move away from 'the dance beat' with his debut album Blue Moods. Blue Moods topped the soul charts in the mid 80's and became a landmark album of ballads selling over 150,000 copies in the UK alone.

This latest work 'Out of the Blue' comes completely 'out of the blue'. The production expertly crafted by musician producer Mx-Ze pulls from classic and contemporary soul, setting up a classy mid tempo backdrop for Keni to deliver in his unmistakable dark smokey style.
Songs are about life, love and relationships taking us on a journey through emotions and feelings we have all touched upon as our lives have unfolded, with its inevitable, twists, turns, ups and downs.
Stevens is the son of a US serviceman and began his career working in a record shop, selling deleted catalogues of soul and lovers rock, rock steady and reggae music. His first move into music came in the mid 1970s, when he joined as lead singer for the group Raw Energy. Raw Energy members included Alan Cooke (now a British actor starring in London Bridge) and Peter Hinds (who went on to play keyboards for 1980s Brit funk band Light of the World). Raw Energy were signed to Conflict Records, but disbanded after 18 months of playing gigs up and down the country.
Stevens was taken on as A&R man for Conflict Records, and being responsible for releasing lovers rock and rock steady music by artists such as Gregory Isaacs in the UK. Stevens also worked as a session singer with Eddy Grant and Marianne Faithfull, before signing to the Elite label as a solo artist in 1985.
Blue Moods period...
Stevens released two singles on Elite Records in 1985, "Night Moves" and "All Day All Night", which were played by specialist UK radio stations. This led to interest in his work, although he was initially mistaken for being a US artist. Polygram offered Stevens a £2.5 million recording contract, which he declined feeling it would threaten his independence.
Staying with Elite Records, Stevens recorded his debut album, Blue Moods. Two singles, "Too Much Too Soon" (on Elite Records) and "Cannot Live Without Your Love" (on the newly formed Jam Today label) were released as 12-inch singles, before Blue Moods appeared on Jam Today in 1987. "Cannot Live Without Your Love" was featured on several soul compilation albums, such as Upfront 6 (on Serious Records).

Blue Moods sold over 150,000 copies in the UK alone, and over a million worldwide. Stevens appeared on a few television shows to promote the album, including, Solid Soul. He released a further two albums, You and Living on the Edge, on Debut Records.
"I am often asked if I write songs for anyone in particular. The reaction to my answer tells me whether or not the questioner understands my work. The answer is no. My songs are about adult relationships and situations.... I don't expect you to change anything in your life or relationship because of these songs, I can only hope they might shed some light on some of the things that often go unsaid in relationships. Therefore enjoy the songs and take from them anything you might find applicable to your own situation.... That's what this recording is about and after all, if you're reading this you've probably paid for it!" [Reproduced from Keni Stevens' You album sleeve notes.

Great to see Brit Soul back at the top of the Soul charts! The album has been successfully promoted by Gary Van den Bussche of DSG Radio Promotions.

Brenda Jones Tribute

We are sad to report the passing of our friend Brenda Jones.
It was reported on her sister's Facebook wall that she had been hit by a car.
According to her sister, Shirley Jones, the singer was struck on Monday, April 3, by several cars while attempting to cross the street while visiting her daughter in Wilmington, Delaware.

Our friendship began when it was reported back in July 2013, that she was homeless. We started a campaign through our DiscoSoulGold page on Facebook for help. Help arrived and she was moved from a shelter to a hotel and then later to a new home with her daughter and Granddaughter.
I only spoke to her last weekend, we spoke about what she was up to, Grandchildren, going back on stage, to even going back to recording. She loved her fans, stage and the artists she worked with had lots of lovely memories to talk about.
(Brenda Jones interview with Solar Radio's Gary Spence )

As part of The Jones Girls, Brenda sang the lead vocals on many of their classic's including This Feelings Killing Me, You Made Me Love You, You're Gonna Make Me Love, Life Goes On, We're A Melody, I'm at your Mercy, Dance Turned Into a Romance, I Close My Eyes, When I'm Gone, ASAP, Lets Be Friends First, What a Fool, I Can Make A Difference, Why You Wanna do That To Me, AH AH AH AH, plus the co-Lead on 'Nights over Egypt among others..

The list of artists the Jones Girls have sung with is like a who's who is Soul music, but these are a few examples Isaac Hayes, Lou Rawls, Prince Phillip Mitchell, Linda Clifford, The Four Tops.

Their performances with Diana Ross opened many doors for the girls. Ross gave them a brief interlude in her show where they would sing "If I Ever Lose This Heaven," a song popularized by Quincy Jones. Kenny Gamble of Philadelphia International Records and singer Patti LaBelle were in the audience during a Philadelphia performance, and after the show, Ross introduced them to The Jones Girls; the group signed with Philadelphia International in early 1979 and the rest they say is history.

Brenda Jonesgirl had spent a lot of time concentrating on her family life. Brenda's last release was “What Your Love Has Done” which was originally written, produced and arranged by Dewey Andrew in 2007 and co-produced by the late George Mena with additional melodies and arrangements that were co-produced by Brenda JonesGirl. The song was left in the can after the sad loss of George Mena, until 2013 when Dewey Andrew decided this needed to be released, so Brenda Jonesgirl went back in the recording studio to add some extra vocal touches with Dewey in the production chair once again, giving the song that magical touch, that chart in the UK Soul charts reaching #1 in many of them. Unfortunately this was Brenda's only solo release.

Her dream was to go back on the stage, but due to life's obstacles and her circumstance it was not meant to be. She would say to me 'God Has It' She used to say Fasho! I never could say it as she wanted me to.

It's no secret that she did not get on with her sister Shirley, but i'm pleased to say that due to the Sister Sledge family despute, they did make up and talked about touring again as The Jones Girls.

May she forever rest in peace, with her sister Valorie and her Mum. We are Gonna miss you Brenda.

Marc Staggers UK Soul Chart Number one

Marc Staggers The Gentleman Of Soul returns to follow up last years double Soul number one success of 'Let Me Be The One' & 'Bring It Home To Me', with Keep Those Fires Burning. Great news this week as Keep Those Fires Burning has jumped to #1 on the official UK Soul chart!  Giving Marc three number ones in a row in the UK Soul charts.

Keep Those Fires Burning was co-written by Marc Staggers with the song producer Nigel Lowis. The song is released from Marc Staggers forthcoming album 'Timeless'. Marc Staggers before the DSG release of  'Bring It Home To Me' was recorded was in fact going to give up singing & the record business! Luckily Gary Spence of Solar Radio introduced Marc Staggers to DSG and the rest is now history.

The Full length Nigel Lowis mix is available to download only, with the Radio mix available for streams and downloads! The Inferno mix is released 31st March.

Bigger said: Marc Staggers delivered one of THE Soul tracks of 2016 and you know what? He's gone and done it again in 2017. KTFB is gonna take some stopping for SOUL TRACK OF THE YEAR!
Marc always delivers and with the loss of Luther it is so good to see someone still giving us real quality vocals and songs in 2017.
This just gives me goose bumps - Gary Spence Solar Radio
